"Hard Going"
In most places, lunar soil
is easy to penetrate down to a depth of about 10 cm, but quickly
becomes hard farther down. Buzz couldn't
hammer this core tube in more than 20 cm. On later
missions, larger-diameter, thin-walled tubes made the job
easier.
In this anaglyph, the foreground bootprint depths look about
right.
The Solar Wind Collector, a sheet of foil hanging from a crossbar at
the top of a metal pole, is just beyond the core tube.
