So Near!
At the time, Shepard and Mitchell had no idea they were so close to the
rim. One reason for this is the fact that the opposite, north rim
is actually lower than the south rim and would have been out of view
until they had an unobstructed view across the crater. In a
mission
review done for the ALSJ in the early 1990s, Ed Mitchell had a strong
sense of frustration that they'd been so close without actually getting
to look into the crater.
