Scoop Extended
Surveyor III landed in this crater on 20 April 1967. It was
equipped with a scoop to give scientists and engineers a shance to
investigate mechanical properties of the soil before the first of the
Apollo landings. Now, on 20 November 1969, Pete and Al are
approaching the robot spacecraft to check on its condition after 31
months on the Moon and, most importantly, to collect various pieces of
the Surveyor for analysis back on Earth. One of the things
they'll bring back is the scoop, which can be seen extenting out to the
right.
