The LM descent engine had enough thrust to allow the
Commander, if it was absolutely necessary, to hover at heights above 10
feet (3 meters) as he moved forward
the just the right landing spot. Once he had a spot he liked, he
started down. At 10 feet altitude, one or more of the probes
hanging from the footpads made contact withthe surface, illuminating
the Contact light. The Commander then shutdown the engine and the
LM dropped to the surface. until with the engine running only
down to 10 feet - or, realistically, a bit less - the exhaust was
not
strong enough to do more than scour the very top layer of soil.
