This sketch reminds us of Alan Bean's Helping Hands and Conrad, Gordon, and Bean: The Fantasy. Pete, Al, and Dick Gordon were a close-knit crew. Ulli notes that Pete and Al had known each other for years. They first met at Jacksonville Naval Air Station in 1956 and then in 1960 at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, the Navy's elite test-pilot training center, where Pete was Al's flight instructor. After the sudden death of C.C. Williams in 1967, it was Pete who selected Al as his new LMP. |
