The 2024 Virginia Tech Office of GIS and Remote Sensing (OGIS) Research Symposium

Share your geospatial analysis, related internship experiences, geospatial course projects, maps, and other creative endeavors with the broader community at the April 5, 2024 Virginia Tech OGIS Symposium. The 2023 poster presentation showcase provides students with the opportunity to share and present their creative talents, network with their peers and professionals, and potentially earn cash prizes in the process (both undergraduate and graduate categories)!

High-Altitude Ballooning at Virginia Tech

The High-Altitude Ballooning at Virginia Tech team was selected to participate in the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project with the goal of streaming live video from a balloon during the April 2024 solar eclipse. Virginia Space Grant Consortium is sponsoring their participation.

April 8, 2024 | 1 p.m.
Experience an unforgettable afternoon at the NASA Wallops Visitor Center on Monday, April 8, from 1-5 p.m. EDT! Safely witness the awe-inspiring Solar Eclipse, catch the thrilling launch of 3 Black Brant IX sounding rockets for the APEP-2 mission, and explore engaging solar-related activities throughout the visitor center. This event will take place rain or shine! At the Wallops Visitor Center, the moon will block a maximum of 81.4% of the Sun’s light during this phenomenon. One sounding rocket will launch for each segment of the Total Solar Eclipse beginning approximately at 2:40 p.m. EDT and ending approximately at 4:05 p.m. EDT, yielding about 45 minutes between each rocket. Note: solar eclipse viewing and rocket launch viewing are dependent upon clear skies.

Tidewater Partial Eclipse
April 8, 2024 | 1:50 p.m.
This day is a rare event: Total Eclipse of the Sun, but in Tidewater the sun will only be partially obscured by 78% of the Moon. BBAA will have the Tidewater location set for club members not traveling to the path of totality. Solar filtered telescopes and approved solar glasses will be available for public viewing.

April 11, 2024 | 1 – 4 p.m
Explore the Wallops Visitor Center during our sensory-friendly afternoon and “find your place in space.” During this time, sounds and lighting in our exhibit spaces will be limited. We will also have touch items available for guests to experience and a designated quiet area. Advance registration is not required to attend.
