This collection of mathematical activities can be used as a science extension to introduce students to mapping the shape of the Milky Way galaxy and to identifying the various kinds of galaxies in the universe. Students learn about the shapes and sizes of other galaxies in the universe as they learn how to classify them. The mathematics problems require using basic scientific notation skills and working with “astronomically large” numbers. The collection provides exercises in plotting points on a Cartesian plane to map the features of our Milky Way. The lessons are correlated to common core standards in mathematics.
