Abstract: The rapid growth of the space industry, and the associated increase in number of objects, drives new challenges in sustaining a safe environment for all space operators. Managing the risk of a conjunction that might result in a collision with debris or an active object requires awareness, preparation, and eventually mitigating action. Conjunctions with other active objects requires coordination to avoid increasing the risk of a collision. NASA has established internal requirements for managing orbital conjunction risk, and published the “NASA Spacecraft Conjunction Assessment and Collision Avoidance Best Practices Handbook”. This session will cover the NASA best practices and their use by other space operators that might benefit from understanding the technical basis for NASA’s conjunction assessment processes. NASA’s conjunction assessment processes have been developed over the past 30 years, and may serve to help other space operators in developing their own mature approach.
Bio: Joshua Krage is currently the technical program manager in the NASA Office of the Chief Engineer overseeing the Mission Resilience and Protection Program (MRPP), formerly known as the Space Asset Protection Program (SAPP). The MRPP supports the NASA Chief Engineer by coordinating and providing technical guidance to improve the resilience and protection of space systems, particularly from malicious threats.
