NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, will host a Sunday Experiment on January 18, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. EST. The event is free and open to the public with a focus on elementary school-aged children and their families.
This month’s Sunday Experiment features fun activities to help children of all ages learn about NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale, or MMS, mission. MMS will solve the mystery of how magnetic fields around Earth connect and disconnect, explosively releasing energy via a process known as magnetic reconnection. A NASA scientist will provide a brief mission overview and volunteers will provide hands-on activities that include spacecraft modeling, 3-D printing, NASA Apps and iPad Teacher Tools, and magnetism demos. Plus, learn how to host your own MMS launch party!
MMS is comprised of four identical instrumented spacecraft that will use the Earth’s magnetic field as a natural laboratory to study magnetic reconnection, one of the most important drivers of space weather events.
