Sharon Monica Jones

Dr. Sharon Monica Jones is the Deputy Director of the Aeronautics Research Directorate (ARD) at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.  She began her NASA career as a computer engineer, designing computer vision algorithms for telerobotic space-based applications at NASA Langley. Prior to becoming deputy director of NASA Langley’s ARD, Dr. Jones served from 2016 as manager of systems analysis and decision support within the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD) Portfolio Analysis and Management Office. In July 2021, she completed a one-year detail assignment as Acting Deputy Director of ARMD’s Transformative Aeronautics Concepts Program. For many years, Dr. Jones represented NASA on several national and international technical committees and advisory groups that addressed aviation safety evaluation and analysis, including the Joint Implementation Measurement Data Analysis Team within the Commercial Aviation Safety Team. She is a recipient of the NASA Exceptional Service Medal for her contributions to, and leadership of, the Agency’s aviation safety analysis capability. She spent five years as a Girl Scout assistant troop leader and was inducted into the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Associate Fellows class of 2022 “for sustained service to the aerospace community through advances in aerospace systems analysis and aviation safety research”. Dr. Jones has a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Hampton University, a Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University.
