Professional Biography

Dr. Milad Memarzadeh earned his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 2015, M.Sc. from Virginia Tech in 2012, and B.Sc. from University of Tehran in 2011. Prior to joining NASA, he served as a senior scientist in the Data Sciences Group and the NASA Aeronautics Research Institute at NASA Ames Research Center, working as a contractor. His expertise lies in applying AI and machine learning to air traffic management, airspace operations, and aviation safety. He previously led the Aviation Data Science Initiative, where he designed and taught a series of courses on data science and machine learning fundamentals with a focus on aviation applications.

Prior to his time at NASA, Dr. Memarzadeh spent three years as a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, where he led several AI-driven projects in ecological and environmental sciences and taught a curriculum on data sciences for smart cities. His Ph.D. research at Carnegie Mellon centered on developing theoretical and computational methods for adaptive monitoring and control of infrastructure systems using Bayesian model-based reinforcement learning. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles in leading engineering and science journals.

In his free time, Milad enjoys trail running, competing in triathlons, and playing the piano.
