Professional Biography

Dr. Krishna Kalyanam serves as the Deputy Director of NASA Aeronautics Research Institute (NARI). He received the B.Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, in 2000, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at Los Angeles, in 2003 and 2005, respectively, all in mechanical engineering. He joined NASA Ames Research Center as an Aerospace Engineer in 2021 and is with the Aviation Systems Division under NASA Aeronautics. Prior to joining NASA, he did various research stints with GE Global Research, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and Xerox PARC. Over the years, his work has spanned precision machining (PhD), Train optimal control and Wind Farm layout optimization (for GE) and multi-UAV scheduling and optimization for AFRL.

His research interests include collaborative autonomy and scalable AI with application to air traffic management (ATM) and advanced air mobility (AAM). Dr. Kalyanam was the recipient of a National Research Council (NRC) Research Associateship award sponsored by the National Academies and affiliated with the Air Vehicles Directorate, AFRL. He has co-authored 20+ journal articles and 40+ peer-reviewed conference publications in diverse areas including optimal control, operations research and autonomous systems. He has also co-designed multi-UAV scheduling algorithms that have been successfully flight tested as part of AFRL’s Intelligent Control & Evaluation of Teams (ICE-T) program.
