Daniel Florez is a NASA test director for Exploration Ground Systems Program at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. In this role, he is responsible for planning and execution of the integrated testing in support of the Artemis II mission.
Experience
He started his career working for United Space Alliance as a ground systems reliability engineer in 2007, and later became a space shuttle hydraulics systems engineer and lead for space shuttle Endeavor. After the end of the shuttle program in 2011, he worked for Siemens Energy as a gas turbine service engineer. In 2014, he returned to Kennedy as a flight controls engineer on the Test, Operations and Support Contract supporting Artemis development, and in 2017, he transitioned to the NASA Test Director Office.
Education
Florez graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering, and he obtained a Master of Science in space systems from the Florida Institute of Technology.
Personal
Originally born in Secaucus, New Jersey, Florez moved to Brazil in 1987 and lived there for 11 years while attending elementary and middle school. In 1998, he moved to Coral Springs, Florida, where he attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Florez is fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish – his mother was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and his father is from Bogota, Colombia. He currently lives in Winter Springs, Florida, with his wife, Heidi, their daughter, Camila, and sons, Kai and Jude.
Florez is an avid triathlete and enjoys training in his spare time. He competed in his first full distance Ironman competition in November 2020. He also enjoys playing music, specifically, the guitar, bass, and drums.
