Summer 2024 Workshop Exploring Servicing Capabilities for the Habitable Worlds Observatory

Hosts: NASA and the University of Maryland, Aerospace Engineering Department Date: Aug 7-8, 2024
Location: University of Maryland, Iribe Center, Antonov AuditoriumFormat: Hybrid (In-person and Remote Participation)

Join us for a two-day workshop hosted by NASA in collaboration with the University of Maryland, focused on advancing capabilities for servicing the Habitable Worlds Observatory at the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2 (SEL2).  This workshop aims to bring together subject matter experts from academia, industry, and government to discuss various architectural approaches to servicing at SEL2, and consider the balance between complexity for serviceability and the benefits of extended operations and enhanced scientific performance. Participants will engage in a series of panel discussions, keynote presentations, and breakout sessions, fostering a collaborative environment to inform the architecture trade space for early concepts of Habitable Worlds Observatory.

The workshop will explore servicing techniques aimed at enhancing scientific capabilities, increasing resilience, and maximizing the return on science-dollar investment for the Habitable Worlds Observatory.

Important Updates for Workshop Participants:

1.       Meal Preferences: Lunch will be held in the lobby.  We will contact in-person participants regarding your meal preferences for pre-paid boxed lunches and beverages available on both days of the workshop. Please respond promptly to ensure we accommodate your preferences and provide you with the opportunity to skip the line and network during the break.  Alternatively, the Breakpoint Café on the first floor of the Iribe Center offers breakfast, lunch, and snack options from 8am – 2pm each day, accepting credit card payment.  Additionally, a map detailing local restaurant options will be posted on this website.  Please note that food and beverages are not permitted in the auditorium.

2.       Parking:  We have arranged for shuttle service from designated parking garages and the Iribe Center in the morning and afternoons on both days of the workshop.  A campus map indicating the Regents Drive Garage and the Xfinity Center Visitor Lot will be posted on this website.

3.       Off-Site Social Event: We are coordinating an off-site social event for the evening of Wednesday, August 7th.  More details will follow.

4.       Poster Session:  An informal poster session will be held on Thursday, Aug 8, in the lobby for higher education students participating in the poster challenge detailed in the link below.  In addition, posters can be viewed online from this website following the workshop.

5.       Facility Tour Registration:  Interested in-person participants will be asked to register for a walking facility tour of UMD’s robotics laboratories on the afternoon of August 8th. Details on how to register will be provided soon.

6.       Vision Board:  If you didn’t submit your Vision Statement for Servicing Habitable Worlds Observatory at the time you registered, we will be contacting you by email to add your comments to our virtual Community Bulletin Board.

The workshop will offer participants a comprehensive agenda, including:

  • An overview of mission objectives for the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) targeted for the servicing community.
  • A series of presentations on current satellite servicing and observatory renewal capabilities, featuring insights from government, industry, and academic perspectives.
  • Interactive discussions on the servicing trade space and the metrics, criteria, and framework for evaluating architectural cases.
  • An exploration of existing technology and solutions for maturation servicing at SEL2.
  • Networking opportunities and engagement for early-career professionals.

Registration Information:

  • The workshop is free, but registration is required.
  • Options are available for both in-person and remote participation.  The link to participate remotely will be sent by email.
  • In-person attendance is limited to 300 people.
