NASA Wallops Visitor Center Apollo-themed Youth Art Contest Announces Grand Prize
The NASA Wallops Flight Facility’s Visitor Center and its partner the Virginia Space Flight Academy are proud to reveal the Grand Prize for the winner of the 2019 Apollo Youth Art Contest – a scholarship to attend the Academy’s space adventure camp.
The “Apollo’s 50th Anniversary” theme aims to inspire art through the celebration of Apollo’s history as we push towards returning to the Moon in 2024 and take the next giant leap in deep space exploration.
“On this 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing, the Virginia Space Flight Academy is pleased to partner with NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center’s Youth Art Contest by offering the opportunity of a lifetime to one lucky winner,” said Helen Sramek, executive director of the Virginia Space Flight Academy.
The Academy offers one week residential camps on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. During a week at camp, students build and launch model rockets; design, build and program robots; and fly drones. Behind the scenes tours of Wallops also are a key part of the space adventure camp experience exposing students to careers at NASA.
The youth art entries will be judged by an esteemed panel of artists and scientists. One overall grand-prize winner, people’s choice winner and NASA’s choice winner will be selected from all entries. A first place, second place, and third place winner will also be selected for each grade category: pre-K – 2, grades 3 – 5, grades 6 – 8, and grades 9 – 12.
A free opening reception and award ceremony of the Apollo Youth Art Contest will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 18, at the NASA Wallops Visitor Center. Winners will be announced and prizes will be presented at 6:30 p.m. in the Visitor Center’s auditorium. The “Apollo 50th Anniversary Youth Art Exhibit” will be on display at the Visitor Center from Thursday, July 18 through Saturday, September 7, 2019.
The contest is open to pre-K through 12th grade students nation-wide. Students participating in the contest must officially register by submitting the Youth Art Registration form by Saturday, June 1. All artwork entries must be submitted or postmarked by Saturday, June 15, 2019.
The NASA Visitor Center, located on Va. Rt. 175 about six miles from U. S. Route 13 and five miles from Chincoteague, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
