NASA Shares Space Vision With Oak Grove Institute Youth

NASA will bring the Vision for Space Exploration to students and their families at the Oak Grove Institute in Murrieta with a program featuring NASA aerospace engineer Robert Meyer Jr. and NASA research pilot C. Gordon Fullerton on Nov. 10 at 9 a.m. Oak Grove (formerly Jack Weaver School), 24275 Jefferson Ave, Murrieta, has been selected to be a NASA Explorer School.
Leading into the school program, the public is invited to a community event at 7 p.m. on Nov. 9, at the school. A NASA aerospace education specialist will present an instructional program for students and their families with hands-on activities. The Temecula Astronomy Club will host a star party on the school’s athletic field beginning at 8 p.m.
Meyer will encourage students to study math and science and prepare for careers in aeronautics and space. NASA’s future exploration to the moon and Mars will depend on the students in today’s classrooms.
Meyer is the associate director for programs at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert. He has a distinguished and exciting career as an aerospace and flight-test engineer. He was assigned to fly in the SR-71 high-speed flight research program. Part of his presentation will be about his own experiences with NASA.
Fullerton is Dryden’s chief pilot. He flies a variety of aircraft including NASA’s B-52 launch aircraft and the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. A former astronaut, Fullerton has flown on the space shuttle twice.
Oak Grove is one of 50 NASA Explorer Schools selected in 2005. The NASA Explorer School (NES) program is designed to help educators and students from diverse communities across the country join NASA’s mission of discovery through educational activities and special learning opportunities tailored to promote science, mathematics, and technology applications.
Over the next three years, students in the NES program will have opportunities to participate in challenges and investigations and to work with NASA scientists and engineers through digital videoconferences. Educators will participate in weeklong workshops at NASA centers to learn new ways to involve their students in science, mathematics, and technology fields.
