NASA Glenn Invites Reporters to Ceremony Recognizing Collaboration With EHOVE Students On Mobile Solar Power Plant

News media are invited to attend a recognition ceremony of the partnership between NASA Glenn and the EHOVE Career Center in the successful completion of a solar array power system trailer on Friday, Oct. 30 at 9:30 a.m.

Guest speakers include:

  • Glenn Center Director Jim Free
  • U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur (D-OH, 9th District)
  • EHOVE Assistant Director Matthew Ehrhardt

Engineers and technicians at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland teamed up with the EHOVE (Erie, Huron, Ottawa Vocation Education) Career Center in Milan, Ohio to build the mobile solar power plant. Mounted on a 16-foot trailer, the power plant can produce three kilowatts of power. Its solar panel arrays cover 512 square feet when opened and can be retracted for transport. It shares the same technology used in Glenn’s 1-kilowatt system, originally designed for moon-based applications. The mobile test bed will travel to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston where it will be used as a power source for a spacecraft power system controls test bed.

Students in EHOVE’s electrical and industrial technology, and collision and refinishing classes, were trained and certified by Glenn engineers and technicians to work on the power system. They installed wiring and welded sections of the solar array frame at both the career center and Glenn. In addition, three students earned welding certification using NASA specifications. In all, about 200 juniors and seniors participated in the two-year project.

The Glenn collaboration with EHOVE continues the agency’s efforts of investing in the nation’s education programs and supporting the country’s educators who prepare, inspire, excite and encourage the young minds of today who will be the workforce of tomorrow.
