More than 300 youths whose parents or guardians are employed at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center toured some of the center’s unique aircraft and research facilities on Tuesday, June 22 during “Take Your Children to Work Day” at the local NASA field center.
Children aged eight through 14 toured the NASA Dryden flight simulation laboratory, the modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft that is used to ferry space shuttle orbiters across the country, and learned about life support on high-altitude aircraft and spacecraft. High school-age youth also toured one of NASA Dryden’s mission control rooms and attended a career orientation program. After lunch in the space shuttle hangar at Dryden, the youthful visitors spent the afternoon with their parent at the employee’s work site.
“Take Our Children to Work Day gives parents a unique opportunity to help children make the crucial correlation between education and future career choices,” said NASA Dryden center director Kevin Petersen. “It is also a wonderful opportunity for children to catch a glimpse of what their parents do each day when they go to work.”
