NBISC Launches New Biospecimen Portal to Accelerate Research
The NASA Biological Institutional Collection (NBISC) is a biorepository of non-human samples collected from NASA-funded spaceflight investigations and correlative ground studies. The purpose of NBISC is to receive, store, document, preserve, and make the collection available to the scientific community. Biospecimens from NBISC are available to anyone with secured funding.
January 28 marked a significant milestone for the research community with the launch of the NBISC Biospecimen Portal—a platform designed to enhance access to a vast collection of biospecimens. The portal provides researchers with search filters and interactive visualization tools, enabling seamless exploration of over 100,000 samples collected over decades of non-human life sciences research.
The database encompasses a diverse array of species and tissue types, offering an invaluable resource for scientists studying biological processes, disease mechanisms, and spaceflight-related adaptations. Through an intuitive search interface, users can efficiently identify and request specific biospecimens by simply selecting desired criteria and submitting a request form. This streamlined process reduces barriers to accessing samples, ultimately accelerating scientific discovery.
By launching this innovative platform, NBISC strengthens its role as a leader in biospecimen accessibility, fostering collaboration and expanding the impact of non-human life sciences research. Explore the portal today and unlock new research possibilities!
