Editor’s note: The federal fiscal year runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30 of the following year. Fiscal year 2023, for example, began on Oct. 1, 2022, and ends on Sept. 30. 2023. Federal agencies’ budget requests are generally published by the White House Office of Management and Budget in the winter or spring preceding the start of the fiscal year.
