Employees Celebrate Lewis Research Center’s 30th Anniversary

Staff members from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Lewis Research Center gather in the hangar to kick off a weekend-long event marking the center’s 30th anniversary. Center Director Bruce Lundin started the event on Friday afternoon by honoring Lewis retirees, including those who began before 1941 and those who transferred to other centers. Headquarters leaders were also on hand. Vera Sharp, wife of former director Raymond Sharp, Abe Silverstein, and Edgar Cortright were honored. After the event, the staff held their annual picnic in the recreation area. All current Lewis employees received a commemorative coin and a special issue of Lewis News. NASA Lewis opened its doors to the public on Saturday and Sunday. The tour included the hangar, the Zero Gravity Facility, the Electric Propulsion Laboratory, the 10- by 10-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel, and the 9-by 15-Foot Low Speed Wind Tunnel. Over 18,000 people attended. The following weekend, Lewis employees and their families were given a chance to tour the facilities and exhibits. NASA Lewis’ Convair F‒106B Delta Dart research aircraft is seen parked outside the hangar.
