In 2009, the F-16D aircraft tested the Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System in areas of potentially hazardous terrain, including canyons and mountains. NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center has made major contributions since then to the system that has saved eight pilots as part of military aircraft and awarded the 2018 Robert J. Collier Trophy, which recognizes the greatest achievements in aeronautics or astronautics in the country each year. The National Aeronautic Association awards the trophy.
