The Space Shuttle Columbia received post-flight servicing in the Mate-Demate Device (MDD), after its first landing at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, CA, April 14, 1981. The gantry-like MDD structure is used for servicing the shuttle orbiters in preparation for their ferry flight back to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, including mounting the shuttle atop NASAs modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.
