With the broad expanse of Rogers Dry Lake and Leuhman Ridge stretching out behind them, NASA’s two Global Hawks line up on the ramp at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards, CA. Bearing NASA tail numbers 871 and 872, the two autonomously operated unmanned aircraft will be used for long-duration environmental science missions. Built by Northrop Grumman, the two early developmental aircraft were obtained from the U.S. Air Force when that service had no further need for them.November 10, 2009
