Retired NASA astronaut and test pilot Fred Haise was more than ready for some left-hand seat flying time when he was given a personal tour of the NASA / DLR Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) by SOFIA 747SP pilot Manny Antimisiaris at the Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, Calif. on Aug. 12, 2011. Haise, who had spent three years as a test pilot from 1963 through 1966 at NASA’s Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base prior to being selected for NASA’s astronaut corps, returned to the center Aug. 11 to recount his experiences as a pilot at the center and then to be honored by the Lancaster Jethawks baseball team at their Aerospace Appreciation Night Aug. 13.August 12, 2011
