With the Deep Space Network’s (DSN) 70 meter (230 foot) antennas approaching 50 years in service, repairs and maintenance become more difficult and costly. The Deep Space Network Aperture Enhancement Program (DAEP) will replace the 70 meter antennas with arrays of four 34 meter (111 foot) Beam Waveguide (BWG) antennas by 2025. The 34 meter antennas will equal the performance of the 70 meter antennas, while providing greater flexibility and reliability at a lower cost. Deep Space Station 35 (DSS-35), the first of these 34 meter antennas, was declared operational in October 2014.
