NASA Logo a Sign of Revitalization

A 12-foot-diameter NASA logo was recently attached to Building 1146.
A NASA logo recently added to a building facing Commander Shepard Boulevard is related to the center's revitalization efforts.

Earlier this month, workers installed a 12-foot-diameter, LED-illuminated NASA logo on the tallest section of Building 1146. The logo faces Commander Shepard Boulevard and is visible to motorists driving by the center. Cathy Mangum, NASA Langley’s associate director, said she’s glad to see the emblem in place. “We were interested in having an outward-facing logo so that our presence is more visible in the community,” Mangum said. “It is fantastic that we are now able to display the iconic NASA logo so prominently.” The idea for a new sign came out of the ViTAL, or Vibrant Transformation to Advance Langley, project. Under a 20-year revitalization plan, outdated facilities are being removed and replaced with new, energy-efficient ones. Building 1146 was formerly home to the 16-Foot Transonic Tunnel, which started operation in 1941 and was demolished in 2011 as part of ViTAL. Construction of the center’s newest building, a 40,000-square-foot Computational Research Facility, is getting underway this year. Image credit: NASA/David C. Bowman
