The Deep Space Network’s third 26 meter antenna near Johannesburg, South Africa was completed. The station was favored because it had previous experience with optical tracking and the Minitrack system, and its longitude was ideal for receiving signals within one hour after launch from Florida. Operations were terminated in June 1974 due to changes in the flight mission needs, but the station was very valuable for 13 years.
