Early on Feb. 20, 1962, NASA astronaut John Glenn departs the crew quarters at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station’s Hangar S. He is accompanied by William Douglas, M.D., the astronauts’ flight surgeon, and equipment specialist Joe Schmitt. They will board the transfer fan for the trip to Launch Pad 14 where Glenn will board his Friendship 7 spacecraft for the Mercury-Atlas 6 (MA-6) mission. Glenn is in his pressure suit and is carrying the portable ventilation unit.
