NASA is building on our International Space Station experience to use the lunar vicinity as a proving ground to demonstrate capabilities and learn to manage the risks of the deep-space environment. Launched aboard the powerful Space Launch System and Orion crew capsule, astronauts in the lunar orbit will conduct space walks, test deep-space communication and navigation techniques, and practice rendezvous operations—building skills, capabilities, and confidence to take the next step—to Mars.
