FIREBIRD’s (Focused Investigations of Relativistic Electron Burst, Intensity, Range, and Dynamics) mission was developed by students from Montana State University with support from the University of New Hampshire. The mission is intended to provide insight into acceleration
and loss processes in the outer Van Allen radiation belt and to provide hands-on opportunities for undergraduates and graduates to develop flight hardware.

Launched by NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative on the ELaNa II mission as an auxiliary payload aboard the NROL-39 Mission on December 6, 2013.
