NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, left, honored Apollo 13 astronaut and former NASA research pilot Fred Haise with the Agency’s Ambassador of Exploration Award during a ceremony in Biloxi, MS, on Dec. 2, 2009. The Ambassador of Exploration Award honors the sacrifices of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo astronauts and involves presentation of an encased moon rock to the astronauts or their families. During the ceremony, Haise presented his moon rock to Gorenflo Elementary School in Biloxi, where the former astronaut began his education. Haise served as a research pilot at NASA’s Flight Research Center from 1963 through 1966 prior to joining the astronaut corps, and later served on one of the two flight crews for the Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests at NASA Dryden in 1977.December 2, 2009
