The future faces of aviation are awesome. Members of Aviation Explorers Post 747, a group of middle- to high-school youth that meets twice a month at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, visited the SonicBAT research flight campaign at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
After a morning briefing from NASA SonicBAT Project Manager Bret Pauer and Principal Investigator Ed Haering, Post 747 went to the tarmac to see the F/A-18s being used for the flight campaign. While waiting for weather to clear and flights to begin, they visited the space shuttle landing facility, toured the launch area, and then returned to “witness” at least two sonic booms during afternoon flights.
Aviation Explorers is a local chapter of Exploring, which provides activities and one-on-one mentorship for youth looking to discover their future. Aviation Explorers 747 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University offers learning opportunities in aviation, engineering, avionics, aircraft mechanics, aerospace, earth and space science, meteorology, air traffic control, aviation business, airport management and operations, computer simulation, aeronautical science, physics, aviation calculations and human factors.
