Mariner 2 was launched a month after Mariner 1 veered off course right after launch. NASA’s first interplanetary program was Mariner. Mariner 2 entered into a Venus trajectory a month after launch and came within 34,800 kilometers (21,750 miles) of Venus. Before it fell silent in January 1963, it had transmitted eleven million data bits back to Earth.
