While continuing work to refine the shuttle propulsion systems, Marshall took a giant leap forward in microgravity developing and operating several new programs including Astro, the International and US Microgravity Laboratories, and the US Microgravity Payloads. Marshall engineers also pushed the limits of propulsion technology in the field of X-vehicles and other advanced transportation systems.
Marshall scientists helped rewrite our understanding of gamma rays with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment for the Compton Gammy Ray Observatory. The decade culminated with the launch of both the first US module for the International Space Station and Chandra X-ray Observatory.
