The Moon rocket and spacecraft lifted off at 1:47 a.m. ET. The Artemis I mission is the first integrated test of the agency’s deep space exploration systems: the Space Launch System rocket, Orion spacecraft, and supporting ground systems. The mission is the first in a series of increasingly complex missions to the Moon. With Artemis missions, NASA will land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon, using innovative technologies to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before.](https://images-assets.nasa.gov/image/KSC_20221115_Artemis%20I%20on%20pad-1/KSC_20221115_Artemis%20I%20on%20pad-1~large.jpg?w=1920&h=1280&fit=clip&crop=faces%2Cfocalpoint)
Ascent Abort-2
July 2, 2019 7:00 a.m. EDT
On July 2, 2019, NASA conducted a successful test known as Ascent Abort-2 (AA-2), which tested the Orion launch abort system (LAS), a critical safety system that sits atop Orion at launch and during ascent. If an emergency occurs during launch, the LAS pulls Orion and its crew away from the rocket for a safe landing in the Atlantic Ocean.
