Apollo 15, moments after ignition at 13:34 GMT on July 26, 1971, at launch complex 39A. The launch tower swing arms have not yet retracted, and they continue to hold the Saturn booster in place while the five F-1 engines build up a combined 7,500,000 pounds of thrust.

The Saturn rocket rises beside the launch tower with chilly oxygen-fuel vapour streaming along its lower flanks.

Apollo 15 charges into the sky, bound for its target on the moon - the Apennine Mountains and Hadley Rille.

A smaller version of the previous image includes labels of the major features. The final resting point of the LM is visible within the light, disturbed ground at the top-right of the image. Hadley Rille runs down the left of the image and the lower slopes of Mount Hadley Delta, including St. George crater, are to the bottom of the frame.

Just east of the landing site with the hummocky landscape between Conon and Galen at the bottom and crater Santos-Dumont at the top. The landing site is about a third way down.

Palus Putredinus with one of the peaks of the Apennine Front to the south. Rima Bradley, a graben-type rille, is near the centre of the frame.

Higher resolution: the landing site is visible as a light smudge within the centre of the circle. The lightness is due to the disturbance of the soil by the LM's descent engine. The Fresnel Rilles are at the top of the image and crater Conon is half obscured at the bottom left.

The Command Module descends under two of its three parachutes, a third having failed.

This picture freezes the dramatic instant of splashdown at 20:45 GMT on August 7, 1971, and reveals the Command Module pounding a textbook-perfect impact crater into the water of the Pacific Ocean. Liquid crater ejecta flies radially from the impact site. The Command Module landed more heavily than usual owing to the failure of one of its parachutes to open (32 feet per second; normally 28 fps under three inflated canopies).
