GeneLab Educational Resources Now Available in Spanish!
As space biology continues to evolve, accessible educational resources play a vital role in inspiring and educating the next generation of scientists. The Open Science Data Repository (OSDR) is committed to expanding its educational outreach by providing tools and activities that make space biology more understandable and engaging for students and educators worldwide. Through programs like GeneLab for Colleges and Universities (GL4U) and GeneLab for High Schools (GL4HS), and with contributions from teacher-interns, OSDR has developed a growing collection of resources designed to introduce learners to key concepts in space biology.
Standalone activities for educators and students have also enabled entry-level explorations into the GeneLab data repository and demonstrated how it can be used to teach topics like model organisms, plants in space, the immune system, and data visualizations. These general education resources were translated into Spanish by Dr. Celia Blanco, a Blue Marble Space research investigator and leader of the Blue Marble Initiative “Astrobiología con Eñe.” This is particularly timely given that NASA TOPST recently funded a project titled “Ciencia Abierta Accesible,” which focuses on community-based instruction of the TOPS Open Science 101 curriculum in Spanish. By offering these resources in Spanish, OSDR is enhancing visibility and accessibility, enabling educators to build requisite knowledge in target languages while reaching a broader community of students, repository users, and future researchers.
