Mapping the earth’s oldest lifeforms using UAVs
In early 2014, NASA Ames Research Scientist Ved Chirayath used Fluid Lensing to create high resolution aerial maps of stromatolites, layered rock-like structures of lithified sediments created by cyanobacteria. Working closely with Dr. Pamela Reid and Erica Parke-Sourssari from the University of Miami, Chirayath spent close to two weeks touring Hamelin Pool Australia collecting aerial footage from select regions along the coastline, supporting Dr. Reid’s research examining the formation, lithification and classification of stromatolites. A few snapshots from this field campaign are shared below.
