Originally 64 meters (210 feet) in diameter, the 70-meter (230-foot) antenna, Deep Space Station 14 (DSS-14), at the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex (GDSCC) was nicknamed, the “Mars Antenna.” The name comes from the first signals that the antenna received in 1964 from Mariner 4 after encountering Mars. The 64-meter antenna was six and a half times more sensitive than the 26-meter (85-foot) antenna it supplanted.
