Tracking and Data Relay Satellite 1 (TDRS-1) was launched into orbit by the Space Transportation System 6 (STS-6) Space Shuttle mission. The Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) second stage did not burn properly and placed TDRS-1 in the wrong orbit. A team of government and contractor personnel conceived a plan of maneuvers with TDRS-1’s one pound thrusters that placed it in its proper orbit. TDRS-1 was fully operational in December 1983. Even with all its issues, TDRS-1 far exceeded its intended lifespan when it was retired in 2010.
