Research Aircraft Integration Facility Characteristics

NASA’s Neil A. Armstrong Flight Research Center’s Research Aircraft Integration Facility (RAIF) offers the following accommodations:

  • Test bays 1, 2, and 3 provide over 30,000 square feet of hangar space.
  • The 225- by 135-ft hangar is accessible through a split 225- by 50-ft door and can be configured to support multiple vehicles or a single large vehicle.
  • Test bays 4 and 5 provide a total of 12, 500 square feet of hangar space that can also be configured to support multiple- or single-vehicle operations.
  • Test bay 6 is a single-vehicle bay providing 1000 square feet of hangar space that can be configured to support projects or programs with more stringent security requirements.
  • Test bay data and communication connectivity to RAIF simulation labs and Armstrong control rooms.
  • The vehicle maintenance support staff is co-located within the RAIF.
  • The project/program and vehicle engineering and technician staff are also co-located within the RAIF.
  • The RAIF features complete vehicle support systems (aircraft cooling, electrical power, and hydraulics).
  • Electrostatic Discharge Association (ESD) certified support labs.
