A minor geomagnetic storm was already in progress on Feb. 19, 2014, when a coronal mass ejection, or CME, struck Earth’s magnetic field. The CME impact revved-up the storm, producing brilliant aurora over both poles.
This aurora australis photograph was taken by Steven Graham on February 19, 2014 near Christchurch, New Zealand.
Mr. Graham also produced a timelapse video that can be view at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpuv6rJhADU.
