Climate Heat Map of Earth

What is the field of climate science all about?

Earth’s climate is continually changing, and global temperatures have been climbing in recent decades. Scientists at NASA Ames study the interconnected systems of the atmosphere, the land, and the water on Earth, and create climate projections that help understand and visualize the effects of climate change.

Why is it important?

Climate impacts all aspects of life on Earth, from food production to the health and well-being of all living organisms. Understanding the climate and its influence on different ecosystems will help us make better-informed decisions for the future of our planet.

Missions & Projects

All research in Earth Science touches the climate: the planet’s climate influences and is influenced by all of Earth’s processes.

Some projects track how animal movement patterns change in response to climate change (Internet of Animals), while others evaluate long-terms patterns in arctic ecosystems (ABoVE). Ames also hosts the NASA Earth eXchange (NEX), which uses supercomputing capabilities to run global climate models and downscaled climate projections.

Tagged Yellowfin Tuna, Grey Reef Sharks, and Great Frigatebirds move in and out of a marine protected area (blue square), which surrounds the Palmyra Atoll (blue circle) in the tropical heart of the Pacific. These species are three of many that rely on the atoll and its surrounding reefs for food and for nesting, and were tracked as part of NASA’s Internet of Animals project.
