Impact Candidates Reported to the MEO by Independent Observers
(last updated 2/1/2021)
Lunar impact candidates residing in the list below were not confirmed by the NASA Meteoroid Environment Office at MSFC but meet one of the following criteria:
1. The flash was confirmed by two or more independent observers. The flash lasts any number of fields, is any brightness, and exhibits a decreasing light curve. There is no indication of flash movement.
2. The flash lasts 3 or more fields (interlaced) or frames (progressive scan) and exhibits a decreasing light curve. The flash is obvious in all fields/frames and there is no indication of flash movement.
3. The flash lasts 2 fields/frames. The flash is easily identifiable (bright) in the second field/frame and there is no indication of flash movement.
Flashes only 1 field/frame in duration, unless confirmed in more than one telescope, are classified as cosmic rays. Flash movement, from field to field, indicates a satellite in the field of view. Decreasing light curves are indicative of the type of impact physics expected when meteoroids strike the moon.
