For the next 30 days, the United States will celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the diverse cultures of Hispanic Americans from countries including Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba and other nations of South America.  

The celebration of Hispanic heritage in the U.S. started as a week-long observation in 1968 called Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the week into a month-long celebration stretching from Sept. 15-Oct. 15 each year.

At NASA’s Langley Research Center, diversity is our strength and our Hispanic-American employees bring their valuable ideas and perspectives to help advance the NASA mission. In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we are highlighting four researchers whose Hispanic heritage plays a role in their important work for the agency. They shared their advice and stories to inspire the next generation.

Respect, perseverance, positive attitude, and hard work are some of the values that have influence my professional career. Our family thought us to always do your best; do it well or don’t do it at all; “I can’t” doesn’t exist. 

El respecto, perseverancia, una actitud positiva y el trabajo duro son algunos de los valores que han influenciado mi carrera profesional. En mi familia nos enseñaron a siempre dar lo mejor; hacer lo bien o no hacerlo; “no puedo” no existe.

I believe everyone’s cultural heritage influences our daily lives – how we think, solve problems, behave, interact with others, etc. Being Latina helps me better appreciate and relate to working with teams comprised of NASA’s diverse workforce.  Understanding our cultural differences (and similarities) helps me to value each person’s unique capability of making a positive and unique contribution to NASA missions.

Creo que la herencia cultural de cada uno influye en nuestro día a día – cómo pensamos, cómo resolvemos problemas, cómo nos comportamos e interactuamos con otros, etcétera. Ser latina me ayuda a apreciar y relacionarme mejor con los equipos de trabajadores de la NASA, donde hay mucha diversidad. Entender nuestras diferencias (y similitudes) culturales me ayuda a valorar la capacidad de cada persona para contribuir de una manera positiva y única a las misiones de la NASA.

I was born in Valencia, Spain, where we have a very rich history based on the influence of ancient cultures, such as the Celtics, Iberians, Greeks, Romans, Moors and Visigoths. This mix of different cultures and traditions, and the passing of centuries, created a variety of diverse regions which developed their own languages. I am bilingual and this opened my mind to believe that diversity means richness.

When I had the opportunity to work at NASA, I understood that different heritages and diversity is the best ingredient for making NASA the best place to work. The diversity at NASA makes me think that

everyone, together and united in our work and passion for doing science, makes a strong and rich team. It also makes me proud every day I go to work and it gives me encouragement and motivation to do what I am doing—research and science—to know more about our home, this blue marble floating in space.

Nací en Valencia, España, donde tenemos una historia muy rica basada en las influencias de muchas culturas antiguas, entre ellas los celtas, los íberos, los griegos, los romanos, los moros y los visigodos. Esta mezcla de culturas y costumbres distintas, y el paso de los siglos, ha creado una variedad de regiones diversas que desarrollaron sus proprios idiomas. Soy bilingüe y este hecho abrió mi mente y me ayudó a creer que la diversidad significa la riqueza.

Cuando tuve la oportunidad de trabajar para la NASA, entendí que las distintas herencias y la diversidad son el mejor ingrediente para hacer que la NASA sea el mejor lugar donde trabajar. La diversidad en la NASA me hace pensar que todos, juntos y unidos en nuestro trabajo y nuestra pasión por la ciencia, hacemos un gran equipo. También me siento orgulloso cada día que voy al trabajo y me anima y me motiva en lo que hago – investigaciones y ciencia – para saber más sobre nuestro hogar, este precioso planeta azul que flota en el espacio.

I have never forgotten where I came from, especially while faced with challenges throughout my 39-year-career at NASA Langley. I grew up in a low-income-housing neighborhood and it was tough. Growing up poor gave me necessary experiences and lessons that helped cultivate and grow the desire and drive of becoming a successful engineer.

I have defied all odds and have proven that it is possible to break down stereotypes and become a successful and productive professional, regardless of heritage or socio-economic upbringing. Honesty and a strong work ethic have been my driving force. I have been told that I am a role model for all minorities, and my advice to them: study with determination, apply yourself and do what is right. You must have a passionate desire and discipline to accomplish your dreams. Never forget where you started; use it as a catalyst to push yourself to become the best possible version of yourself.     

Nunca te olvides donde comenzaste, úsalo como catalítico para empujarte y convertirte en la mejor versión posible de ti mismo. Crecí en un barrio de pocos recursos económicos y fue difícil. Crecer en la pobreza me dio las experiencias y las lecciones necessarias que me ayudó a cultivar el deseo y la passion para volverme un ingeniero exitoso.

He desafiado las apuestas en mi contra y he comprobado que es posible romper los estereotipos y volverme un ingeniero exitoso y un profesional produtivo, a pesar de la herencia o la crianza socio-económica. La honestidad y una ética laboral fuerte han sido mi fuerza impulsora. Me han dicho que soy un ejemplo para todas las minorías y mi consejo para ellas es: estudia con determinación, aplícate y has lo que es correcto. Tiene que poseer un deseo y una disciplina para realizar sus sueños. Nunca olvidar donde empezó; utilícelo como catalizador para esforzarse a ser la mejor version de Usted.
