OSDR Chats with Dr Keith Siew on His Latest Publication

Welcome to “OSDR Chats,” an interview series featuring authors of OSDR-enabled publications. Researchers share highlights about their work, emphasizing the valuable roles played by the Open Science Data Repository (OSDR) and the Analysis Working Groups (AWGs) in their research. This newest interview features Dr Keith Siew sharing insights on his publication, “Cosmic kidney disease: An integrated pan-omic, physiological and morphological study into spaceflight-induced renal dysfunction”, which was included along with 44 other publications in the Nature press package.

Deep space missions are planned, but the effects on vital organs like the kidney are underrepresented in current literature. Dr Siew and team help to fill this knowledge gap through their study on the effects of spaceflight conditions on kidneys by analyzing 25 datasets available from the OSDR from mice, humans, and simulated environments. They found that space exposure can increase kidney stone risks, change kidney structure, and cause kidney damage, especially when exposed to cosmic radiation, such as what astronauts would face on a trip to Mars, hence inciting need for further studies.

OSDR recently spoke to Dr Keith Siew to hear about the highlights of this publication and about how the OSDR and AWGs enabled this publication.
