Through inventions, field campaigns, physical tests, analysis and modeling, they harvested data and developed new tools vital to NASA’s missions — including those supporting the Artemis program’s goal of a sustainable human presence on the Moon.
Take a guided tour through the center’s year with “Innovation, Discovery, Exploration,” Langley’s 2019 Annual Report, published today.
Accomplishments in 2019 ranged from measuring the impact of wildfire smoke on American air quality to work on a quiet supersonic X-plane. Langley was also a major player in a successful test of an escape system built to protect astronauts blasting off on deep space missions.
“In this report, you’ll learn how Langley made a difference for our nation,” wrote Center Director Clayton Turner in an introduction to the report. “I believe you’ll be inspired by the dedication, skill and passion these achievements illustrate.”
Charles Cockrell, director of Langley’s Office of Strategic Analysis, Communications and Business Development, said the Annual Report’s title expresses Langley’s value to the agency.
“Langley is dedicated to innovation, discovery and exploration — all of which lies at the heart of NASA’s ambitious goals,” Cockrell said. “This report uses words, graphics, photos and videos to show how Langley researchers leverage public resources and strategic partnerships to overcome obstacles, expand knowledge and build a better future for all.”
