Girls in STEM 2018 will offer 170 students in grades 6 through 8 insights into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers by giving them the opportunity to meet NASA’s scientists and engineers and encouraging them to think about STEM professions.

This event includes a panel discussion about careers in STEM at 10:15 a.m. followed by an engineering design challenge, make-it-take-it activities and tours.

Activities include creating energy storing bead bracelets that harness the Sun’s power, making a liquid cooling and ventilation garment that keeps astronauts at a comfortable temperature, constructing a handheld rocket and building a robotic arm effector.

At 11 a.m. half of the students will participate in the design challenge and activities, while the other half tours Glenn facilities. At 1 p.m. the second challenge, activities and set of tours begins.

Tour stops will include:

  • Simulated Lunar Operations (SLOPE) laboratory, home to a 60-foot long sandpit full of simulated lunar soil
  • Zero Gravity Research Facility, NASA’s premier facility for ground-based microgravity research
  • Propulsion Systems Laboratory, NASA’s only ground-based test facility that can provide true flight simulation
  • Altitude Combustion Stand, used for simulated altitude rocket tests
  • Graphics and Visualization Laboratory, where students can experience virtual reality
  • Telescience Support Center, which allows researchers on Earth to operate experiments onboard the International Space Station
  • Photovoltaic Lab, where energy is created from light

Students attending Girls in STEM are from the following programs:
