International Observe the Moon Night is a global celebration of lunar and planetary science and exploration, celestial observation, and personal and cultural connections to the Moon. 2019 marks the 10th anniversary of International Observe the Moon Night. The Goddard event will celebrate past, present, and future lunar exploration, continuing the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo program. The program will highlight recent advances in lunar science and raise awareness NASA’s Artemis program that will land the first woman and next man on the Moon.

The agenda includes:

  • Hands-on activities
  • A family-friendly presentation highlighting exploration of the Earth and the Moon
  • A lunar science presentation discussing analysis of Apollo rock samples
  • A rover built by a high school robotics team for a space-themed competition that visitors can operate
  • The United States Geological Survey education team, connecting the Grand Canyon mapping expedition of John Wesley Powell 150 years ago with the Apollo anniversary and future exploration – on Earth, and beyond
  • Personal stories of Moon landing memories and how the Apollo program influenced peoples’ lives
  • Moon and celestial observing with telescopes

International Observe the Moon Night is sponsored by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission and the Solar System Exploration Division of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, with support from many partners. LRO is managed by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
